A.K.A.: The Hidden Dimensions of Architects

Asian Cultural Council Exhibition Opens in Early November

A.K.A.: The Hidden Dimensions of Architects will open at the Pao Galleries of the Hong Kong Arts Centre on 4 November. The exhibition celebrates the establishment of the Asian Cultural Council’s Hong Kong Institute of Architects Young Architects’ Award (YAA) sponsored by the Hsin Chong – K.N. Godfrey Yeh Education Fund since 1990. This interactive and innovative exhibition features the works of 14 YAA architects and examines their unseen roles which impact the communities around them.

Held from 4 November until 7 November and curated by Martin Fung, Chan Lai Kiu, Jason Tang, Billy Tam, Brian Chan and William Liu, A.K.A.: The Hidden Dimensions of Architects is the first collaboration between 14 leading Hong Kong architects. As architects who are ‘also known as’ volunteer designers, artists, educators, writers and cultural leaders, these 14 architects reveal the different ways that they express themselves and make a social impact which is often obscured. The 14 participating architects include: William Liu (1992 YAA Recipient), Chan Lai Kiu (1993), Gary Chang (1996), Martin Fung (1997), Betsy Cheung (1999), Tim Li (2001), Paul Chu (2002), Frankie Lui (2002), Brian Chan (2003), Stephen Chan (2004), Billy Tam (2005), Mary Grace Chiu (2008), Jason Tang (2009), and Tony Ip (2010).

This exhibition honors the establishment of the Asian Cultural Council’s Hong Kong Institute of Architects Young Architects’ Award (YAA), sponsored by the Hsin Chong – K.N. Godfrey Yeh Education Fund. Through the Young Architects’ Award, a number of outstanding architects have gained enriching experiences in the U.S. through the Asian Cultural Council program which have become a source of inspiration throughout their subsequent careers. Michelle Vosper, Director of Asian Cultural Council Hong Kong says, “The exhibition is the materialization of the impact of the Asian Cultural Council’s grant on the YAA architects. We are glad to see the development of these YAA architects as they connect and contribute to the community through a combination of architecture and other creative means.” Curator Martin Fung says, “The exhibition is a platform for the YAA architects to share our ACC experiences and learn about each other’s works. This would open doors for future collaborations within the architecture and wider cultural community.”

A highlight of the exhibition is its accompanying roundtable discussion titled: “Hong Kong Architects: Where Are You?” where architects, guest speakers and the general public would explore together the past, present and future presence of architects in shaping the physical and social environment of Hong Kong. In addition to the YAA exhibitors, the roundtable discussion will bring together guest speakers including noted author and cultural critic Professor Leo Ou-fan Lee of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Co-founder and Director of Press Room Group Alan Lo, ACC grantee and Director of AGC Design Ltd. Vincent Ng and Founder of Goods of Desire (G.O.D.) Douglas Young.
