Midori Shares Love of Music with Students and Youth in Hong Kong

In celebration of the Asian Cultural Council’s (ACC) 50th Anniversary, world-renowned violinist Midori will be conducting a special education and outreach programme from May 26 – 28, 2013 which will open with a benefit recital at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Amphitheatre of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) at 5 pm on May 26, 2013. A workshop for musicians with disabilities, a master class for students of the HKAPA and a visit to the Fresh Fish Traders’ School will take place afterwards on the 27th and 28th of May. The programme is a co-presentation between ACC and the HKAPA who, along with Midori, are aligned in their belief that the joy of music should be shared with audiences of all ages and all walks of life in Hong Kong.

“For over two decades, my passion for community engagement has brought me to engage in a dialogue through music in various parts of the world, particularly with young people of diverse backgrounds. I am looking forward to doing so for the first time here in Hong Kong and to partnering with the ACC in this endeavour,” said Midori. Lady Ivy Wu, Vice Chairman of the ACC Hong Kong Friends’ Committee said: “Midori’s work is a wonderful representation of ACC’s mission, which is to support the arts and cultural dialogue beyond borders and barriers. The ACC is grateful to have both Midori and the HKAPA’s partnership in this program which will undoubtedly be at the highest level of artistic and educational quality.” Professor Adrian Walter, Director of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, noted: “The Academy is proud to co-present this very special program with the ACC which will provide a unique opportunity for Academy students and the broader Hong Kong community to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of classical music through the voice of one of its great performers and educators.”

About Midori

Midori is recognized as an extraordinary performer, a devoted and gifted educator, and an innovative community engagement activist. In recognition of the breadth and quality of her work in these three entirely separate fields, in 2012 she was given the prestigious Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum in Davos, was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and was awarded an honorary doctorate in music by Yale University. In 2007, she was named a Messenger of Peace by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. In essence, over the years she has created a new model for young artists who seek to balance the joys and demands of a performing career at the highest level with a hands-on investment in the power of music to change lives. Midori is now teaching at University of Southern California as the Chair of the Strings Department and she has been given the title of "Distinguished Professor" in recognition of her outstanding accomplishments in teaching. She is also the holder of the Jascha Heifetz Chair in Violin.
